Point Pinos AKA Sewer Plant Beach

At the very tip of the Monterey Peninsula is Point Pinos jutting out into the Pacific. With no protection from the open ocean, it bears the brunt of sea and weather which is why dive boats steaming for the protected dive sites in Carmel will often turn around here rather than brave the even rougher seas that are certainly just beyond it to the West. This site is sometimes called "Sewer Plant Beach" for the thankfully inactive waste water treatment discharge just inland. The unappealing name and the rough conditions are both likely reasons why a diver coming to try this site won't have much company. For the intrepid shore diver however, the rugged shore is a fun challenge.

Amenities

There is ample parking and a public restroom and freshwater spigot across the street at Crespi Pond.

Attractions & Wildlife

Much of the shallow inshore has been converted to urchin barren in recent years, resembling Coral Street Beach but being more open to the ocean means a greater likelihood of encountering big water species like gray whales.

Entry & Access

There are several places where divers can enter the water- none of them are particularly easy. Low tide means a long, arduous scramble down to the water that might be better suited to free divers than scuba divers.

Skill Level & Hazards

This site is exposed and rugged with many jagged rocks. The water is deep and fast with waves and current washing over the point. Attempt this site only under ideal circumstances.
